Seal Mitted and Blue Mitted Ragdoll Kittens in Australia

A mitted Ragdoll looks like a colourpoint that has stepped into white socks: white mittens on the front paws, white boots up the back legs, a white chin and a white stripe down the chest. The full coloured mask stays, and the eyes are blue. Seal mitted and blue mitted are the two most common versions, and two of the queens at Regal Ragdoll Kittens are mitted.

Where the white goes on a mitted Ragdoll

  • Front paws: white mittens that stop around the wrist. Even mittens are prized in the show ring; uneven ones are common and harmless.
  • Back legs: white boots that run up the back of the leg to the hock.
  • Chin and chest: a white chin is essential, and a white stripe runs from the chin down the chest and along the belly.
  • Face: a full coloured mask. Some mitteds have a narrow white blaze down the nose, which is allowed.
  • Nose leather: the colour of the points, not pink, because the nose sits inside the mask.

That last point is the easiest way to tell a mitted from a bicolour Ragdoll, which has a white inverted V over the nose and a pink nose.

The seal mitted Ragdoll cat

Dark seal brown ears, mask, legs and tail on a cream body, finished with bright white mittens and boots. The contrast is striking, and it gets stronger as the points darken over the first two or three years. Clementine, our quietest queen, is a seal mitted, and this season's youngest kitten, Wren, is a seal mitted too. Read more about the colour on our seal point Ragdoll page.

The blue mitted Ragdoll cat

Slate grey-blue points on a cool white body, with the same white mittens and chin. Blue mitteds have a softer, more muted look than seals. Isla, our most talkative queen, is a blue mitted, and she passes the pattern on to roughly half her kittens. Our blue point Ragdoll page explains blue in more depth.

Lilac and chocolate mitted Ragdolls

The pattern comes in the two rarer colours as well. A lilac mitted has pale pinkish-grey points, so its mittens can be hard to spot in a young kitten. A chocolate mitted has warm milk-chocolate points. Both need parents that carry the right genes, explained on our lilac and chocolate Ragdoll pages.

How mittens change as a kitten grows

Mitted kittens are born white like every Ragdoll, so at first there is nothing to tell the mittens from the legs. As the points colour up over the first weeks, the legs darken and the white mittens and boots appear. By go-home at twelve weeks the pattern is clear, though the boundary between mitten and leg keeps sharpening for months. If you are choosing from photos of a very young kitten, ask the breeder to confirm the pattern rather than guessing.

Every pattern and colour is compared side by side in our Ragdoll colours guide.

Mitted Ragdoll questions

What is a mitted Ragdoll?

A mitted Ragdoll is a pointed Ragdoll with white mittens on its front paws, white boots on its back legs up to the hock, a white chin and a white stripe running down the chest to the belly. The face has a full coloured mask, sometimes with a thin white blaze down the nose, and the eyes are blue.

What is the difference between a seal mitted and a blue mitted Ragdoll?

Only the colour of the points. A seal mitted has dark seal brown ears, mask and tail with white mittens, and dark brown nose leather. A blue mitted has the same white pattern with slate grey-blue points and a slate grey nose. Their size and temperament are the same.

Does a mitted Ragdoll have to have a white chin?

Yes. The white chin is part of what makes a mitted a mitted. Without it, a cat with white feet is usually called a mismarked colourpoint. For a pet it makes no difference, but if you plan to show, ask the breeder to point out the chin and the line of white on the belly.

How much is a mitted Ragdoll kitten?

A mitted kitten from Regal Ragdoll Kittens is $1,500, the same as every other colour and pattern. That price includes desexing, microchipping, two F3 vaccinations, a vet check and ACF pedigree papers. Interstate families add the flight to their nearest capital-city airport at cost.
